Maybe the big guy’s Android reactions are just a poorly hidden. Fear of the unknown. Fear of losing $. Some are not as afraid, or pretend not to be. Maybe Ballmer is one of them. Open source can move faster (in some cases). As soon as people think of new features they want, they try to find a way to get them. If Android has a UI/browser that supports new features we want, we’ll look for a phone with that. (btw FF is considering mobile browser! yay!)

Will the open source community contribute a lot to this? When/why does open source get big? If the frustration with existing products is very high? If it costs too much?

If phone operators can save a TON of money, they will. Who knows how much it pays to get windows mobile on hardware?
Apple = special case. Customers pay a lot for a certain product that fits their expectations and is often cutting edge. They are willing to give up certain things for their love. (ie: choice of carriers).

In the meantime, I have some minor issues with WinMo6, but I can still Use it…

Great, thanks! I’ve got some troubles with compiz and my ATI card and this solution gives me exactly what I want… No wobbly windows, cubes and stuff - just some nice shadows which makes the desktop much clearer a nice looking task switcher and last but not least a working solution!
